Warning: this post is not for anyone who thinks there are some things just too geeky and unbelievably sad to be discussed in public (or even in private). Sorry!
Staring lovingly at my iPhone this morning (as I am wont to do), I wondered why the clock app icon pictures 10:15 rather than any other time.
After a flash of inspiration, I decided it was because 10:15 translates by way of 1337 to “LOLS” (or would it be better if it were 10:12 for lolz?). Coincidence? Sure, it only appeals to a certain kind of person, but what self-respecting Apple engineer wouldn’t try to sneak a geeky joke into their product?
I’ve had a look around and whilst there are many theories about this time, I can’t find anyone else proposing this one so I therefore claim it as my own! The most likely alternative - based on this information about the iPad - is that it was done so as to show the right time during Steve Job’s January 9, 2007 unveiling of the iPhone. But did they really choose a time that millions would see every day for years to come on multiple products just for the sake of that event? Where are the lols in that?
