Happy birthday to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971

On the 27th May 1971, the Misuse of Drugs Bill was granted royal assent (to become the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971). Surely its architects would be (are?) ecstatic to see how in 2011, thanks to prohibition, only a fraction of almost all drugs are stopped from making it into the country or onto the streets, drug use has risen fallen significantly, the harms of drug use are greatly exacerbated reduced, and the public are given a worryingly misleading very sound idea of which drugs are the most dangerous.

As I said with the recent 50th anniversary of the the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, feel free to celebrate this anniversary with a drink and a smoke, thankful that post-war politicians weren’t so keen on preventing the ‘evil’ of alcohol or tobacco use (not that their prohibition would have achieved anything other than “unintended consequences”).
